MANUAL CLEANUP OF DATABASE

Andy,
I see I did not really give enough information.

My original issues were
1. The 600G drive I use for SL (one of two in a laptop) was very nearly full.

2. I had multiple(s) of many pics and had multiple sources arranged in a structure which had grown unworkable due to a few abandoned starts at reorganizing it over the years.

3. Dragging and dropping to a new structure would take much more work than an export with import to a newer structure.

All originals were stored by SL.

I exported the entire set in what I considered to be logical pieces; Once with the original structure intact, once as individual pics - both sets with xmp files.
I tested export/import before starting to ensure that it did in fact restore properly. I did not see how to export the tag/keyword tree but I did know that the ones I had used were in the xmp files.

The internal recycle bin was cleared after each export. I noted that it would only delete a percentage of its contents each time even though I had selected the entire contents.

I 'compressed' using the SL menu item 'Compress Database'. I could not see that it did much other than perhaps re-indexing.

I deleted all web and collage activity outright as I had no ongoing need for those which had been created.

The image I sent with my original question shows the current size and file count of the folders within the dn name within the \Studioline3 Data folder.
I am running StudioLine Photo Classic 4 v4.2.14

So, in short, I have no Image Archive pics in the database but the folder sizes still total some 250G. I could export the tag/keyword structure and start over but I still would like to understand why the larger part of the 250G is still there, and assuming it would reindex itself, whether or not it can be manually deleted.

OK, I will make a new iteration and start reloading. I likely did have physical duplicates as most were the result of having changed image names externally and then reloading (Its a long sad story smile ).

I did compare file counts on in SL and the backups (allowing for XMPs) so I am confident that I have all the images. It a moot point as they are no longer in SL other than in the Temp folder.

Thanks for the quick help.

AUTOMATION - Rename - Advanced

Photo Classic 4

I am growing tired of re specifying the rename format each time I import more photos.

I don't see any 'help' on this and so far have discovered no way to set a default automated 'advanced' format.

Am I missing something?

As an aside, also wondering why this feature could not use the scripting tools/terms used to label photos on export

It would be great if the type of text manipulation that you can specify for a text overlay on export could be done during import. Perhaps it could be done by simply adding some of the variables used in renaming to a general pool of variables that could be called for various uses. I am travelling so have not been able to flesh this out much.

Creating a keyword from a descriptor

Andy
Further to this thread
I am trying to fill EXIF User Comments with a string
%%EXIF.Model%%_%%EXIF.Exposure Program%%_%%EXIF.ISO Speed Rating%%
_%%EXIF.ExposureTime%%_%%EXIF.Aperture%%_%%EXIF.Focal Length%%

I have tried this via a pre-filled form - with no results at all

and via inserting the string directly into the descriptors - which only populates the Model and the underscores

Am I overlooking something?

Thanks Andy

Works like a charm. Actually I just edited out the blanks in my string so at least for those variables it is simply the name as shown in the descriptor list with no blanks.

Is there any method of selecting a number of photos and then exporting their descriptors such as to be able to get them into a spreadsheet, one row per picture, multiple columns for descriptors?

%%xxx%% Variables For Use in Descriptors

Where can I find a list of the %%xxx%% variables that can be used to dynamically fill Descriptors?

I am aware of %%filename%%, %%header%% and a couple of others but expect there must be more.

%%xxx%% Variables For Use in Descriptors

Thanks Andy. If I knew that I had forgotten. If it is in the manual I overlooked it.

A particular variable I am looking for is the name of the actual folder within the Image Archive - not the path to the file in Windows. Is there a variable for that?

DESCRIPTOR EXPORT

Thanks Andy.
I have played a bit with the xmp files and see that they do contain what I am looking for.

I will see what I can find on the web in the way of extraction apps. It strikes me that a CSV report feature would be a small step from the Describe form. It could be so simple as to dump a Note or Comment field for selected pics to a CSV file. The user could then populate the Note or Comment field with Right Click Inserts, including delimiters, as desired. Maybe something to think about.

I've been playing a bit and have created a hammer and tong method loosely based on my suggestion.
There are several hundred photos for which I am trying to get specific Descriptors out into a spreadsheet.
Using the Right Click feature I concatenated all of the Descriptors under File Name with a semi-colon between each.
I exported the photos to a Folder on my computer.
I opened Command Prompt, Changed Directory to that Folder and issued dir /b > Descriptors.txt
(the /b generates only Windows FileName.FileType)
This created Descriptors.txt in the Folder and it contains the Windows FileName.FileType values, one line per file
I then Opened Descriptors.txt in Excel via the Open command which allowed me to specify the semi-colons as delimiters
And there I have it; one column per Descriptor type, one Row per photo.

Perhaps easier in today's scripts but the last time I coded was DOS smile

Is this worth sharing on the Forum?

As a point of interest, Win10 seems to substitute an underscore for invalid characters.

While correcting the few invalid characters I had used I was unable to convince the Search and Replace to find any argument with a " (double quote) which I had used for 'Inch', or a - (hyphen). Is there a delimeter to tell this function that I am specifying the " or - as text?

Is there a Command Line Argument To Exit?

StudioLine Photo Classic 4:
My backup software runs in the middle of the night. If I happen to have left StudioLine open it will not properly back up the database. The backup software is fairly sophisticated and can issue Command Line commands. Is there a Command Line argument which would cause a running copy of StudioLine to Exit?

I am sure I could find a way to create a script which changes focus to the proper window (if it is open) and so to speak presses File Exit but I am hoping for a cleaner solution.

I haven't used SL Photo Classic 4 for several months.
Tried to start it, got the error message "StudioLine couldn't open your database, because your MDAC/Jet installation is not working. Your system has an apparent mix of different versions for these components. Details can be found in the logfile."
in a popup with [Exit] [More Information] [View logfile].
[More information] and [View logfile] to do do anything.
Researched error, found a repair for MDAC/Jet Installation in Major Geeks.
Ran the repair.
Tried Photo Classic 4 again.
Same results but it took it somewhat longer to return the error message.
So far as I know Photo Classic is up to date as is Win 10 Pro
